He Came, We Saw, and We were Conquered… !!

Posted by suryya on July 27, 2008

Well I am talking about CEO of Capgemini’s Financial Services SBU, Mr. Raymond Spencer, who had come to visit us at Great Lakes today as Guest Lecturer. During the course of one hour with us, he shared his experiences on many things including “How to successfully manage a Business”, “Keys to becoming a good leader” & “Successfully managing one’s Career”. By the way, Mr. Spencer, also happens to be on BAC (Business Advisory Council) of our Institute.

On Successfully managing a Business
While telling us about how to successfully manage a business, he laid special emphasis on 3 dimensions of Business Management namely – Customer, Organization, Employees. Apart from setting the Organization’s processes right & following world class standards and keeping the morale of employees high by taking care of their professional growth, it is very essential to understand the aspirations of your Customers. You have to know your Customer’s business and the needs of your “Customer’s Customer” to successfully come up with effective solutions for your own Customers. Most senior managers, said Mr. Spencer, manage the parts and not the whole of business. This has to be addressed by focusing on all 3 aspects of business to be a successful enterprise.

On Becoming a Good Leader
There are 3 dimensions of effective Leadership : Knowing, Doing & Being. While ‘Knowing’ is related to the intellectual rigor of a leader and ‘Doing’ is the art of skillful execution with discipline, ‘Being’ is something which has to be understood in context. This is the inner arena of a leader which forms the fundamental core and here lies his inner strength. This aspect is the very basis upon which the other two dimensions i.e. ‘Knowing’ & ‘Doing’ are built. As per him, this foundation can be made strong by regular meditation, introspection or by taking a ‘Daily Sabbatical’.

On Managing One’s Career Effectively
First and foremost, one has to have a powerful vision of what one want to be in future. This vision should be nothing short of a clearly projected picture/painting or a snapshot of what one aspires to become. Secondly, one has to introspect and come up with a set of values which will form the basis of one’s day-to-day decisions and behavior. The third element of managing one’s career is to set specific career goals which will show the course of direction to one’s life. After setting goals, one has to inculcate a habit of doing daily action towards achieving these goals. And finally, one should have what he called “Personal Board of Advisors” in life as one cannot know everything and hence cannot succeed in isolation. Therefore one should actively seek advice and rely on other’s help to be successful in life.

All in all, it was a great experience for all of us listening to the success mantras from somebody who’s been there and done that and that too splendidly !! By the end of the session, (to say the least) we were all sitting there in Lake Superior, totally spellbound by his charm, amused by his wit and overwhelmed by his profound insights.

More heads per Great Lakes

Posted by suryya on July 21, 2008

A bunch of us was just going through the newspaper sometime in the extremely close past – little more than one third of an hour ago.  A few words were screaming from the pit of their underbellies, a couple of pages after the third one: Four thousand thirty something CAT 2008 forms sold on Day One! And that is approximately three times that of last year, which supposedly had the largest number of question papers printed for the exam in the history of Asia . More  news had that certain branches of certain banks ran out of forms by noon and many distressed, dejected aspirants, after hitting the nearest lamp-post with a tightly-clenched fist , moved towards the next spot of possible availability. In many cases the ordeal turned out to be a sweaty ‘treasure’ hunt under the hot afternoon sun.
The point that comes out is – assuming that the trend continues , we are,  in all probabilities going to see about a million hands selectively ( or randomly or a mix of both) blackening circles on the OMR sheet on D Sunday of November, o8. This makes it equivalent to the whole of Pondicherry including its booze-buying-outsiders, run after the cat. (We were told that it is a rat race out there (?!))
The story is going to be not very different for the GMAT takers. I once overheard from a herd of techies outside Tidel Park that all slots and seats for taking the test on a certain date are sold out. And a few Air-India-fulls of takers would be going to Colombo, Bangkok, Lagos etc to give it a shot.
By the closest estimates; considering the figures of the number of applicants last year , the number this year is likely to touch the dew drop resting on the tip of the Eiffel Tower.
Yes, Great Lakes is going to get greater by another hundred heads next year. But the applications are going to get more by the number of hair follicles on a grizzly bear. Now that gives the Admissions Team and the data servers something to sip a cuppa coffee over.
Meanwhile, we sniff bloodshed, mayhem, cut-throat competition and such other aromas.

Livin’ La Vida Salsa…

Posted by georgekaipanat on July 20, 2008

The last 4 days have been lots of fun. We had Salsa and Jive week at Great lakes taught by Mr Unni.

26 (13 enthusiastic guys and 13 nervous girls – they were nervous seeing the guys’ extreme enthusiasm) of us signed up for the first session which lasted 4 days, 2 hours a day. As was expected, most of the girls took to dancing as ducks take to water… they could atleast float if not swim! We guys on the other hand were like those bomber ships during the 2nd world war – Huge, bulky, lightning fast, full of fire in the belly, ready to shoot – and yet sank right down into the sea :-S

Salsa, even though conceived as a form of street dance, is a sophisticated art form requiring talent and grace. A lot of the fun depends on your partner. If the partner has talent, you can hide behind that glory. Being devoid of any talent, grace was the only thing I could rely upon to salvage my pride. But from what I hear from others who watched me and some other unfortunate souls who danced with me, I scored very high on the ‘Losers Hall-of-Fame’ in both characteristics. I guess the problem is that I tend to kinda become all charged up when I hear lively music which makes me go into the realm of “Dappankooth” (a south Indian style of street dancing). Hey! In my defense, its atleast street dancing!!! At the end of it all we broke major myths – that we guys were good at dancing! Nothing could have been farther from the truth.

As for my partner, it was poor Miss Namratha. She is one of the smallest girls in our class (but very bubbly) and I’m no Tiny Tim myself. I think she got stuck with me coz while all the others were searching for partners, they probably dint see her. It was almost like David and Goliath dancing, except here David was a girl… And Goliath, as in the Bible, was me, the dumb Ogre… There was one more difference. In the legend David wins, but here neither of us won even though there was considerable violence and bloodshed… (punches on the face, arms twisting, backs cracking, toes bleeding… all the works!)

You don’t believe me? Well on day One, we were taught the basics of Salsa and Jive. So, it was pretty fine except for the bleeding toes and twisting arms. But on the second day, the variations (some, pretty complicated) started. Yet, we danced away for the full 2 hours. Many a time I caught Namratha trying to sneak out of the back door, but me being the charged up guy that I was, I always managed to pull her back in. At one point, we were to do a sequence in Jive where the guy is supposed to balance the girl by the hips and swing her down – The Back Flip (please see pics). Namratha refused to do this step with me. She was scared that if I were to lose my balance and fall on her, she would be stuck to the floor, as flat as a pancake!

On the third day, my partner came to the dance floor and took a Bharatha Naatyam stance, Y’know with hands clasping the hips…

“Dude, we are not here to do Bharatha Naatam!”, I told her sarcastically
“I’m not trying to do Bharatha Naatyam dumbo.. You broke my hip yesterday!!”, she replied with fire raging in her eyes

Eeeps… I had done it again! Anyway we took it easy that day. Thursday was the grand finale’. The guys were to come dressed in semi formals and the gals in formal party dress.

I took Namratha aside and told her with an air of confidence ”Get ready to be transported to a different place!” {Wink! Wink!}
“Where? You mean the hospital??? :-P “, came her quick retort

:-D

A typical day in the life of a Great Laker….

Posted by georgekaipanat on July 16, 2008

8AM: I am on the beach having a good  time…..and all of a sudden, the alarm rings and I find myself on the bed and switch it off hoping to get back to the beach but it simply does not happen….eventually, after 10 minutes, i lift myself from the depth of the bed and walk around in no particular direction and muttering something and feeling groggy. Brushing my teeth is a huge exercise in itself as i desperately try to wake myself up…..somehow, i manage to run a bath….i look at the time and it is 850…
8:55AM: I quickly reach the college as i stay pretty close to it. I barely manage to grab some aloo paratha and next thing i know its 9 o clock.
9:00AM: I am in the class room and i am JUST IN TIME for my attendance….aah, i get the feeling, my life’s objective has been achieved….and i sit down hoping to learn/unlearn…whichever way u look at it…
10:15AM: The class is over and i go for a break….i meet a few cheerful faces….sipping coffee/tea talking about the weather, life, class….etc….how i wish the break lasted for an eternity….damn!…
1030AM: I am back to the classroom…and i keep wondering if it is the KARMA of a previous life that i have to attend classes one after the other….
11:45AM: One more break….just when i thought things were getting out of hand…..
12:00PM: just one of those courses that teaches you about social psycology, upanishads, bhagavat geeta, vivekananda!!!!!…..its a great value add for an MBA program. I keep the class occupied with a constant barrage of questions to the Prof….one of the most interactive sessions we have.

1:15PM: Lunch Time. For all those stomachs that have been rendered highly acidic after skipping breakfast….this is catch up time…..the usual gossip about committees etc goes on…
2:00PM: Back to the classroom….issshhhhhh….people are asleep…do not disturb….the gentle breeze of the AC accompanied by the professor humming the same old tune makes for a good afternoon siesta….
3:30PM: all the souls in the classroom are resurrected from their sleep after hearing the word break…..people get their much needed dose of coffee/tea at the local chai shop located a few metres away from the college….
3:45PM: back to the classroom….just when you thought it was safe to enter the classroom….we have to gear up for a surprise test!!!…..man, i curse myself for wasting my time….i look around and people are busy making a mince meat of the paper….i somehow manage to salvage my Grade for the subject…..phew, that was close…….
5:00PM: yippie…..i am not talking about my class mate “IPPY”…..but I am expressing my utter delight that classes for the day are over….but, my friend, there is a catch….we have been given an assignment and we are supposed to submit it the next day at 9!!….i just discuss what needs to be done for the next 1 hr….
6:00PM: Its snacks time….2 minute noodles prepared by our very own “Anna”…he has a whole carton of packets….and i am sure the manufacturer’s sales are at an all time high thanks to Great Lakes….we all try our best to separate one thread of noodle from the other….but eventually, we learn to negotiate it…..
7:00PM: We sit down to start the assignment and assess the magnitude of the task ahead of us…..how i wish i had more classes instead of assignments……
9:00 PM: After brainstorming about the assignment in groups of 5….we conclude that we have understood the objective of the assignment….its a remarkable breakthrough given that we used only two hours instead of 3…
9:30 PM: Dinner Time…..its not exactly heavenly nectar but we get our food from the caterer Amrith….who provides relief to the drought hit students of saidapet…..
10:00 PM: Enough is enough……we decide to get the job done ASAP…..something like the IBM AD…..we decide the place to innovate and ideate…so that when we do ideate….we have a place to do it…..
10:30 PM: we see the needles of the clock ticking away….while we painfully google for the next 3 to 4 hours to find some reference material for the assignment.
2:30 AM: We are almost done with the assignment….well, almost….its time to integrate, differentiate and collate everybody’s contribution…
4:00 AM: Assignment is done…..my group mate has already gone to Hawaii…err….i mean in his dreams….
4:30 AM: I fall flat on the bed after reaching home….and the next thing i know i am on the beach….only to be woken up by the alarm at 8…..damn…i was so close to talking to the blonde….

CREATIVITY… can it be taught ?

Posted by georgekaipanat on July 12, 2008

Boy, you must be kidding !! Nothing can be farther from the truth and this subject statement is completely Hogwash.

Well this bold statement was made by Mr. K R Ravi who’d come to deliver us a guest lecture on “Lateral Thinking & Creativity“. One has to keep one’s eyes and ears open when the speaker is none other than a well known management guru who also happens to be South Asia’s First Dr. EDWARD DE BONO certified public trainer in Lateral Thinking.

But then, I must admit, he definitely had some point.

Contrary to popular perception, Creativity is not only something which Mr. M F Hussein or Mr. Javed Akhtar are bestowed with. Even generation of new ideas during brainstorming session in a Boardroom can also be termed as Creativity. Looking at the same problem with altogether a different mindset is another example of being creative. And this Creativity, Mr. Ravi emphasized, can be very well taught and learnt. So Creativity is nothing more than a skill with a specific set of techniques which can be learnt by anybody.

Some other management gyaan from this guru :
- If you have defined a given problem in only one way, you might not have defined the problem completely.
- If you have come up with only one solution to a given problem, you might not have got the complete solution.

His final words of advice to us :
Keep on challenging the existing notions, beliefs and assumptions as they are the biggest stumbling blocks in way of Lateral Thinking and Creativity.

Well said Mr Ravi…..!!

Updates- The Mumbai Alumni Meet-June 08

Posted by katchucrap on July 1, 2008

A week back I had shot a mail to all the batches at Great Lakes, about the alumni meet this Sunday in Mumbai. The city was having dry weather and the rains hardly existed then… but somehow Alum meets in Mumbai so far have had this rather uncanny way of bringing rain along with them. This one was no different.

The attendees were

Kartik Kannan- Cleartrip.com
Srivas Ramgopal- VGSL( VSNL Global Services)
Rahul Khare(Frost and Sullivan)
Pawan Bhawsar( VGSL)
Vipul Singhal(TCS)
Seema Mohanty(Bayer)
Prakritish Buragohain(Bayer)
Nihit Nirmal(Shaadi.com)
Logendra(L and T)

With 20 minutes left for the Alumni meet to start, the skies opened up and caught me unawares. Heavy rains. The 1 pm start was then relaxes to 2 pm, as people slowly found their way to Nirmal Lifestyle, Mulund. This picture was taken enroute Mulund station to Nirmal Lifestyle.

Rahul Khare shares a funny bone with Logendra and Srivas Ramgopal, who till then was the sole guy with the Great Lakes T shirt.

Vipul Singhal and Kartik Kannan…..fresh after Mcveggie crunch and French fries

Seema Mohanty, finally breaks her silence :-) . Seema looked quite lost in the meeting, and spoke to us about her role in Procurement division at Bayer. Logendra tries to look aghast, into a cross talk session happening on the other side of the table

Thats a serious discussion going on between Rahul Khare and Srivas, as Pawan(greyish green shirt) and Logendra(Maroon) are ogling beyond the Macdonalds window at things more interesting to the eye.

Vipul Singhal on ” Why Banias rule in Business”, while Nihit Nirmal wears a forlorn ” I- have heard -this -so -many -times-because I am your room mate look”

Srivas, Rahul and Pawan listen to how Nihit is making hay while beautiful girls register at Shaadi.com . Nihit camouflaged his web flirting act by using MBA’ish words like ” I look into Analytics”.

Thats me, with a “Turn me On” Message on the T shirt. Unfortunately the Mumbai girls in Mulund were not up to it,

A couple of hours into the meet, a few Vipul one liners later and a couple of I-am-bored looks from Nihit, Prakritish Buragohain(the guy in the middle joined us). He was spared the bill payment, as he came in late, and Macdonalds was about pre paying. By the way, if you are asking why should he pay the bill? He just got married in Assam, without the help of Shaadi.com (Nihit lost a customer!)

Pawan seems to vehemently argue with some one during the meet. Logi sees humor in the argument.

Some of what we discussed were

1) each alum present’s company and role offered
2) switching possibilities
3) Book reviews
4) Meeting up with Uncle Bala when he comes in July
5) How can we make it more productive, by discussing business models in next meets
6) generall chit chat, leg pulling and mud slinging.
7) Which movie to watch at PVR…(we went for ‘Via Darjeeling’ by the way)

We hope to make future alum meets more productive with more people and a more structured approach to discussing things that mutually help us. That was a quick and dirty update from my side.

Ni Hao Ma!

Posted by katchucrap on July 1, 2008

We Great Lakers dont really wish in  Chinese, or IM in Chinese, but we would get a fair hang of a Chinese movie than most others :-)   and NDTV acknowledges the fact that Great Lakes is the only B school thats realised the importance of Chinese in adding a dimension to understand the culture of China, which offers immense business oppurtunities.

Check this Link on how Indian B-Schoolers can benefit from learning Chinese- http://www.ndtvprofit.com/2008/07/01102255/Indian-MBAs-can-benefit-from-l.html

PS: Ni Hao Ma means, How are you in Chinese, the words that my Tam Brahm Chinese instructor drilled every day while at Great Lakes
