Just thought to update you all with the recent major mergers & equity buyouts happened in
Indian business..
There were around 320 M&A deals in the first half of 2006 of total worth USD 25.6 bln. 76/320 were cross border deals of worth USD 5.2 bln.

- Tata tea the worlds No 2 branded tea company (acquired Tetly, UK tea brand recently) is
buying a stake of 30% in Energy Brands Inc, maker of Glacueau vitamin water in US. This is the largest-ever foreign equity investment by an Indian company. The only doubt for investors is how can Tata manage this business when it doesnt have any related experience even domestically..

Luminaries@Great Lakes Series Vol 2

Posted by greatlaker on August 24, 2006

Abhijeet Bhaduri – The Man behind the success of “Mediocre But Arrogant”, was at Great Lakes for a Guest Lecture today. We have had some of the best speakers in the past including T T Durai and others, and this guy was by no means lesser than any of those, and made sure that by the time he finished his session, we had cramps after laughing like crazy.

A Graduate of XLRI Jamshedpur, he is presently Director HR at Frito Lays(Pepsi co. Division). He read a few excerpts from his book and enacted alongside, and his expressions and voice modulation was a treat to watch. He also made sure that we learnt something out of one of the most funniest guest lectures, and shared some of his experiences with us.

All in all, this was one of the most enriching Guest Lectures in last 4 months of my stay at Great Lakes, and am sure he has few more fans even before reading his book. Most of us carry his personally autographed book, and reading the same stands at highest priority as far as i am concerned…:)-

Viva @ Dr. Rakesh Singh

Posted by greatlaker on August 20, 2006

Guys..sorry for not posting and updating you all about the happenings here. After Kotler’s visit we had exams, assignments, case studies, (ofcoz as u all know these things are part of life here…) break for 2 days and a ban on blogspots for a while. So our blog team could’nt post any updates. Anyways as now we are back, more postings will be happening..check out this space..

Last few days were very hectic.
- Back to back exams (Optimization mid term, Micro Economics end term)..
- Corporate Strategy “Michael Porter’s Corporate Strategy” case study (Cooper industries, its a mother of all case studies w.r.t Mergers and Aquisition strategies..)…
- the horrifying hurdle for us all is the Macro Economics viva by our most terrorising/intellectual prof Dr. Rakesh Singh (as said earlier we all sweetly call him Rocky)..
- and last but not the least Guest Lectures by Dr. Bala Iyer on “Google’s future strategies”, Mr. Ramesh Arjunji, Associate Director Health Economics/Clinical Outcomes Research (HECOR) on “Pricing of new drugs”….

Now we are a bit considerably free (although we have an end term this 24th on Financial Management 2, this break of 2 days is a huge relaxation from rigorous schedule..)

BTW here is the testimonial from one of the students about the Viva experience…

Dear All

Wow…. What a wonderful day has it been today…. Jus amazing…today has been my best day at Great Lakes so far.. the amount of knowledge that I received today is beyond imagination…

Not to miss out on the Viva… It was intellectually so so so stimulating… the question that were fired were so very intriguing and testing my knowledge in Micro, Macro, Finance, Trade and what not ?????

It was such pleasure waiting from 1.00 clock till 5.30 P.m to get my turn to “rock” the viva… huh jus hope that we get more such opportunities to have such purposeful interactions with such high quality professors…

It was indeed worth every minute of the wait… My answers, I guess were so very good that Dr.MR. Professor Rakesh Singh did not even let them to be completed…..(prob that’s time management)

Anyways wish all u guys who have it on Sunday all the Best for a thrilling and drilling session…

…Shriram

Rgds,
Gopi Krishna..

Luminaries@Great Lakes Series

Posted by greatlaker on August 14, 2006

One of the USP’s of Great Lakes is the industry interface. The Strong Business Advisory Council, makes sure that we get the best in industry to interact with. And thats one of the reasons why I thought I will write abt the same along with faculty.
I will just post along a brief profile of People from industry who have visited Great Lakes in past, and in future, will keep you updated as and when the event occurs. Some of the names are mentioned below:

Mr Alok Sharma – Director Apple India, He was here to speak on Leadership, values and strategy. His was one of the most insightful lectures, wherein he suitably used examples to support his claims and was able to speak at the same wavelength as the students wanted him to. Not only did he shared his thoughts, but he made sure he publicised the new Apple Beauty:), the laptop he showed made each and every one here jealous.

Mr Ratan Tata – Chairman Tata Group – He was here for a CEO Lecture wherein he shared his experience and illuminated the path to success for us. He was very motivating and praised the success Great Lakes had been able to achieve in such a small time. He also extended full support towards Great Lakes, and for all those who are ignorant of this fact he is also Chairman Business Advisory Council, Great Lakes Chennai

Mr LakshmiNarayan – CEO Cognizant – He came when we were having fun during our outbound and he only added to the fun by sharing some wonderful thoughts. He told about his expereinces before CTS and how he was able to reach the stage where he is now.
Such wonderful, humble people with such wonderful thoughts have only added to the learnings@ Great Lakes.
